Selfoss is conveniently situated for exploring Southern Iceland and visiting many of Iceland’s spectacular natural wonders.
Geysir (60 km) - The world’s oldest known geyser and one of the most impressive. Eruptions can hurl boiling water up to 60 metres into the air. Eruptions may be infrequent, and have, in the past, stopped altogether for years at a time, but currently they are occurring about three times a day on average.
Thingvellir (45 km) – Thingvellir was made a national park in 1928 because of its historical importance and because of its special tectonic and volcanic environment. Cracks or faults run throughout the area, the largest, Almannagjá, being a veritable canyon. One of these faults is known as Peningagjá, or Penny Canyon, because it is littered with coins at the bottom. Legend has it that if you make a wish and then throw in a coin, if you see the coin hit the bottom, then your wish will come true.
Gullfoss (70 km) – Gulfoss is a waterfall on Hvítá (The White River) in south central Iceland. The flow of the river from regular rains and glacial run off makes Gullfoss the largest volume waterfall in Europe and one of the most spectacular sights in the world.
