The 4-star Amsterdam American Hotel is situated right on the lively Leidseplein, it has its own boat landing and features rooms with views of the canal or the Leidseplein. Built in 1900, using original Art Nouveau architectural style, the decorative features can be found in the cafe, public areas and some of the 175 non-smoking rooms.

The 174 guest rooms on six floor are all indvidual and differ from one another, last rennovated in 2001. Some feature original stained glass windows, others have granite columns,high ceilings or a balcony.
Every room features a television with pay perview options, a minibar, iron and ironing board, safe, working desk with dual line telephone and modem plug possibility, voice mail mesaaging service, automated wake-up system and complimentary mineralwater on arrival. Each bathroom has a bath and shower combination, toiletries, enlarging mirror, bathrobe and hair-dryer. A choice of queen, king and twin rooms is available, and some rooms allow for a rollaway bed at a surcharge (limited availability).
The hotel invites you to discover its historic beauty combined with its modern lifestyle philosphy. Guests can enjoy themselves with all their senses in ordering complimentary life style items for the duration of their stay such as a cd-player, bathradio, etc. To relax and stimulate the senses, a relaxing bath tea, spa products or eye tea pads can be purchased and bought to your room.
Speciality rooms start with the spacious Deluxe rooms of which most have a balcony or a view over the canal or Leiseplein. Junior Suites are even more spacious and offer a comfortable seating area and Senseo Coffeemakers. The most beautiful suite is named after the Dutch spy and dancer Matahari and has been refurbished in January 2004. It features two seating areas with leather sofa and chairs, a bookshelf with books to borrow, a mini-stereo system, a working area hidden from view, a whirlpool and the bed placed in the center of the room nesteled against two granite columns. The suite has a view over both the canal and the square is popular with honeymooners and company executives.
Food & beverage
The Café Americain is opened for breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake. Dinner can be enjoyed in a classical setting under Tiffany lamps and original wall paintings, featuring scenes from Shakespeare’s 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
On Sunday, a lively Jazz Brunch is served from 12:30 to 15:30.
High Tea is available every Saturday and is served from 14:00 to 17:00.
The Bar Americain offers award winning cocktails or the famous ‘biertje’ with Dutch snacks.
A monthly changing seasonal 3-course menu is also offered, along with other seasonal dishes. The kitchen is opened until 22:00.
The Café Americain is opened from Monday to Friday between 06:30 and 23:30. On Saturday and Sunday is opened from 07:00 until 23:30.
The cosy Nightwatch Bar is popular with both hotel guests and ‘Amsterdammers’ alike. The Bar American is open from 17:00 until 01:00.
The hotel is ideally situated in the very heart of the city, the Leidseplein. This is the perfect location for visiting the main museums, cinemas, theatres, bars, restaurants and major shopping areas.
The Van Gogh museum, Rijksmuseum, PC Hoofdstraat and the Vondelpark are all just a short stroll away. The Holland Casino and Hard Rock Café are also just a stone’s throw away.
Arriving by car:
- Drive along the A4 highway (E10).
- Take exit Zaanstad, then exit Osdorp (S-106).
- Turn right and follow the road, passing the Surinameplein. At this roundabout, keep going straight on.
- Turn to the left and cross the Kostverlorenvaart bridge. Turn left on the Overtoom. At the end of the Overtoom, turn left into the Stadthouderskade.
- Cross the 1st bridge on the right and then the 2nd street, Marnixstraat, onto the Leidsekade. The hotel is on your left.
Public transport:
The Connexxion shuttle bus to and from Schiphol Airport stops only 50 metres from the hotel entrance and departs approximately every 20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased on the bus or with the concierge.
Trams 1, 2, 5 (coming from Central Station) and 6, 7, 10 stop directly in front of the hotel. Tickets can be bought on board or with the concierge.
A valid ID or passport is required upon check-in.
Check-in starts at 15:00. The only way to guarantee an early arrival is to reserve the room for the night before.
Check-out is at 12 noon. We kindly request you to take this time into consideration. If you would like to keep the room longer than 12 noon, there will be an automatic charge of EUR 25 (excluding 5% city tax) per hour, until 16:00. After 16:00, our daily room rate will apply.
If an advanced departure takes place (a so-called early check out), the first following night will be charged extra, with the exception of congress and event periods wherein the entire stay will be charged.
While some drugs are legalized in The Netherlands, drugs are not permitted anywhere on the Hotel’s premises. If this rule is violated, we will charge an extra EUR 150 to your account.
Please note:
- Reservations of 9 or more rooms will have different cancellation policies, as this concerns a group booking. Cancellations must be made before 16:00 on the day before arrival.
- For payments by cash a deposit of EUR 90 per night is compulsory
Cancellation
If cancelled up to 1 day before the date of arrival, no fee will be charged.
If cancelled later or in case of no-show, the first night will be charged.
Children and extra beds
All children are welcome.
All children under 12 years stay free of charge when using existing bedding.
All children under 2 years stay free of charge for cots.
All older children or adults are charged EUR 35.00 per night and person for extra beds.
Maximum capacity of total guests in a room is 3.
